E+ID Resources

E+ID Facilities

Inspired by student design proposals, our facilities support student productivity through dedicated studios and an on-site print room. The student resource center provides design publications, manufacturer catalogs, finish samples and work/collaboration spaces for students and faculty.

The studios feature:

  • State-of-the-art workstations, with individual computers, adjustable monitors, and the latest design software packages (AutoCAD, Revit, 3DS Max, SketchUpPro, Adobe CC)
  • Color laser printers, overhead projector, and projection screen
  • Sustainable architectural finishes, and energy-efficient fixtures and equipment
  • Durable pin-up surfaces for individual and group presentations

The resource center includes:

  • Full in-house reprographics capabilities (copier, scanners, printers, plotters, and 3D printer)
  • Informal student meeting and presentation areas that foster a lively, collaborative work/learning environment
  • A full-size, accessible, working kitchen (incorporating universal and sustainable design principles) which provides students a place to work, study, and socialize
  • A well-stocked materials sample room containing a wide selection of architectural finishes
  • A design library including current design textbooks, magazines, journals and reference resources

E+ID students also enjoy access to the Fine Arts Department workshop for sculpting, ceramics classes, constructing project mock-ups, or building large-scale assemblies.

Computer Specifications

Environmental + Interior Design (E+ID) students learn Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), 3D Modeling, Computer Rendering and Building Information Modeling (BIM). Therefore, it is unlikely that a generic laptop will have the capability to successfully run these programs. Computers running specialized graphics programs tend to be more expensive than typical laptops. The information provided here is what, to the best of our knowledge, is the most current recommendations from the software manufacturers and professional input of best practices.

Recommended Hardware and Software Information

For optimum running of the breadth of required software, the PC platform is most often recommended.  The E+ID program does not endorse one brand of computer over the other – as long as the computer can run the various software programs required and meets the hardware specifications. See note below regarding Mac platforms.

The PC hardware and software recommendations and requirements follow:

Computer Station - Hardware

Minimum Hardware Requirements

  • Windows 7 Professional
  • Dell Optiplex 9020
  • Intel Core i7 -3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz
  • 8 GB ram
  • 64-bit operating system
  • AMD Radeon HD 7470
  • Chip Type:  ATI display adapter (0x6778)
  • DAC Type:  Internal DAC (400 MHz)
  • Adapter String:  AMD Radeon HD 7470
  • Bios Information:  113-C2641100-106
  • Total Available Memory:  4841 MB
  • Dedicated Video Memory:  1024 MB
  • System Video Memory:  0 MB
  • Shared System Memory:  3817 MB

Regarding Apple Computers
While some of the required programs are available in dual-platform versions – Microsoft Windows and Apple OS – the software may not be organized or set-up in the same way for both operating systems. E+ID courses will teach the software programs from the Microsoft Windows platform. Instructors do not have time to troubleshoot cross-platform problems. Therefore, we strongly encourage students to purchase a PC-based laptop running Microsoft Windows. If a student has (or insist on) using a Mac, additional software is necessary to effectively execute the (graphics) programs required in the curriculum. Apple’s Bootcamp for dual-booting the computer must be installed. The hard drive should be partitioned with at least 50% dedicated for the PC. Windows 7 Home Premium or higher should be installed as an operating system. VMware Fusion or Parallels are not recommended substitutes to Bootcamp and partitioning the hard drive.

Laptop Maintenance
Students are responsible for resolving technical issues with their laptops, and an extended warranty or service agreement is recommended. Project deadlines will not be extended due to faulty equipment, slow processing, or other computer failures. The Chaminade Helpdesk can assist with some basic troubleshooting regarding hardware and standard computer software issues. Design software issues are to be directed to faculty who teach the software. To check with the Helpdesk to see if they can assist with an issue, they are located in 101 Sullivan Library (the glass doors on the lower level facing TC Ching Hall).  You can also email them at helpdesk@chaminade.edu or call them at 808.735.4855.

Work Product Storage – Student’s Responsibility
A USB 3.0 storage device (flash drive or external hard drive) that holds a minimum of 8 GB is recommended (higher is better) for file transfers.  Be aware when working on the E+ID studio computer workstations, student information is NOT stored on the desktop overnight. At the end of each work session, students are responsible for being sure their work is saved to their personal external storage device. Additionally, a 1TB (or greater) external hard drive is strongly recommend for use as a secondary backup storage device.
